This series of volumes will provide a definitive record of them, incorporating 4mm scale drawings and will enable modellers to construct a representative selection of vehicles.All five co-authors are themselves modellers and life-long Southern enthusiasts whilst two, in their capacity as professional railwaymen, have been associated with the design, construction and operation of many of the wagons described in the text.
AUTHORS’ NOTES AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSThis series of volumes on Southern Wagons is the joint work of five enthusiasts and will describe in photographs and drawings most, if not all, of the goods and ballast wagons which were owned or designed by the Southern Railway. When complete, the work will run to four volumes. This volume describes the former London Et South Western Railway wagons which passed into Southern Railway ownership. It also includes wagons previously operated by the Somerset 8 Dorset Joint Railway, which entered LSWR stock in 1914. Volume Two will describe, in a similar way, the wagons of the London, Brighton 8 South Coast Railway, plus those of the various minor companies taken over at the Grouping. Volume Three deals with the wagons of the London, Chatham 8 Dover Railway, the South Eastern Railway and the South Eastern 8 Chatham Railway, and lastly, Volume Four will describe those wagons which were designed and built by the Southern Railway.The books are not intended as technical works but as volumes for the modeller and historian. Our aim will be to concentrate on the visible variations between types rather than the technical differences. The latter were often of much greater importance to a railwayman but were often invisible to the eye. Four volumes may seem rather generous treatment for a railway which, in 1923, possessed only 5 per cent of the total railway-owned wagon stock of this country, but it must be remembered that we are dealing, effectively, with the developing designs of seven major companies rather than one, and there was no lack of variety amongst them.No work of this kind would be possible without the assistance of many individuals over a long period of time and, whilst we cannot mention everyone by name, our special thanks must go to Terance Barry, Denis Cullum, John Childs (for the SaDJR section), Bob Essery, who kindly made available photographs collected by the late W. 0. Steel, Harold Tumilty and A. E. West, without whose help these books would be devoid of much valuable material. We would also like to record our appreciation to all those enthusiasts who took photographs of goods wagons in the days when it was not an accepted part of our hobby. Without .their foresight it would be impossible to compile a book about wagons. Finally, we must also thank our many friends and colleagues of British Rail for their valued assistance over a very long period of time.
