LOCATION: Laira, DevonDATE: 1905 7SUBJECT: A rarely see shedportrait of GWR De Glehn FrenchCompound 4-4-2 La Alliance No. 104 seen here on Laira shed with her footplate crewposing for the photographer.This 4-4-2 De Glehn locomotive wasbuilt by Societe Alsacienne, Belfort and arrived in Britain in June 1905. Alongwith two other De Glehn Compounds, she was purchased in order that the performanceof this type of locomotive could be assessed and then compared with the companysSwindon built express engines.She was only named La Alliance in1907 to celebrate the signing of the LEntente Cordiale in that year. As can beseen in this photograph, No 104 was paired with Churchward 3,500 gallon tenderand she had also not yet been named. The maximum axle weight was 19 tonswhich restricted her use to the main lines and a few branch lines (routeavailability Red). No 104 initially worked West of England and Wolverhamptonexpresses and from 1913 was based at Oxford shed (OXF). She was eventuallywithdrawn in September 1928. CONDITION: Very good clean andunmarked save for location details hand written in light pencil to reverse (seescan). Always kept in an album and with some minor corner wear as a consequence. PHOTOGRAPHER: Unknown. TYPE: Bordered b & wapprox.
