LOCATION: East of EnglandDATE: Undated must be between 1898 -1907SUBJECT: A postcard likely commissioned by the GER topromote the concept of continental travel using the companys servicesfeaturing GER Holden P43 Class 4-2-2 No. 18 seen here in charge ofthe renowned Hook of Holland express train. The Hook of Holland express was a train de luxe,with passenger cars panelled in varnished teak, all twelve coaches being vestibulecorridor stock. Built for the GER at Stratford Works and designed toreach the east coast ports in less than two hours from London, she entered serviceduring 1898 as running number 18. Only a single batch of tenwas built, all on order P43 in 1898, numbered 10 to 19. They had a shortworking life, as they were incapable of handing increasing heavy trains and No.18 was one of the first members of the class to be withdrawn during 1907. Theywere the last ‘singles’ built for the Great Eastern, and the last in service. CONDITION: Good to average for age clean andunmarked.
