This is an original vintage commemorative medal issued to mark the centenary of railway travel, 1825-1925 and was linked to celebrations held in Darlington on 1-3 July 1925.  Designed by artist Gilbert Bayes FRSBS.

The front contains images of Edward Pease, chairman and guiding influence in the mangement of the first public railway, and of George Stephenson who built the first engine on the railway, and drove it on the famous journey on 27th Sept 1825.  It also includes the coats of arms of Stockton and of Darlington, between which the world’s first passenger railway ran.  On the reverse is the figure of Vulcan, holding the Locomotion No 1, the first engine employed on the public railway – an LNER pacific type.

Unfortunately there is no box or leaflet with this – it is the medal only.

The item is from the estate of engineer Ted Martin – http://www.modelenginenews.org/people/martin.html
