FREE SHIPPING ANYWHERE IN THE CONTINENTAL US! This is an antique portrait of John Rogers Balch who served as Treasurer for The Providence-Worcester Railroad in the mid to late 1800s. It appears to be a painting over a photograph, which was a rather common practice during the 1800s. It is displayed in an ornate gilt wood and gesso frame from the same period. Sight of the photo measures
9 1/4″ x 7 1/4″ and the frame measures 17 3/4″ x 14 3/4″. As you can see in the photos, there is some loss to the portrait and to the frame. Selling as shown. Provenance on verso led me to the following information about this gentleman:John Rogers Balch (Aug. 27, 1808 – Oct. 25, 1886) was born in Providence, Rhode Island to John Rogers and Saphira (Packard) Balch. John would attend public and private schools in Providence until he was fourteen. At fourteen John began working with Cook & Brown, Cotton merchants, and would remain there for 23 years until its dissolution. In 1845 John would move on to work with the Providence and Worcester Railroad (P&W). On May 17, 1847 he became the assistant treasurer to the P&W and later was elevated to the position of Treasurer. Thanks for stopping by.
