An iconic railway, it was the first cog railway in the world. Its first paying passengers ascended Mt. Washington in August of 1868 and President U.S. Grant rode the railway in August of 1869.
When I rode in 2000 all locomotives were still STEAM and the fare was $44. Today there are both steam and biodiesel locos and the fare is $79. Not many railways still running after 152 years!
