35mm mono slide of 4082 ‘Windsor Castle’ at Swindon 20-10-1963
…this is not the original 4082 of 1924
Notes purloined from brdatabase.info : 4082 was driven by King George VI from Swindon Works to Swindon station when new in 1924 and was deemed an appropriate engine to haul his funeral train. However, it needed more work than could be achieved in the time and so 7013 ‘Bristol Castle’ took it’s identity in February 1952. It was supposed to be a case of swapping back after the service but in fact the swap never happened and the two locomotives eked out their days in the guise of each other.
