LOCATION: Oldham, ManchesterDATE: Undated – believed to be April 1966SUBJECT: An interesting portrait of late steam operations in the North West with ex-LMS Stanier ‘Black 5’ Class 4-6-0 BR No. 45409 seen here easing herself south past the site Oldham’s Clegg Street yard and Central station with the youngest member of a footplate crew I have ever seen on BR metals (likely the son of the driver or fireman). Built by Armstrong Whitworthfor the LMS, she entered service during 1937 as No. 5409. Renumbered 45409 in November 1949 following Nationalisation, she was allocated to a range of sheds in the NorthWest, mainly in and around Manchester, until her final transfer from Bolton (9K) to Stockport Edgeley (9B) shed on 30 April 1966, being withdrawn from that shed during November 1967 after just short of 30 years combined service. Note: I strongly believe that the local photographer caught sight of this engine en route from Bolton to her new allocation at Stockport Edgeley shed using the Oldham and Guide Bridge loop lines in order to avoid the bottleneck of lines through central Manchester. CONDITION: Excellent clean and unmarked save for identificationdetails hand written to reverse (see scan). Always kept in an album. PHOTOGRAPHER: J. Davenport of Oldham.TYPE: Unbordered approx.(5.5 x 3.5)” b & w gloss finish original photograph.                                                                           [c_corn_449]All my photographs andpostcards are tissue paper-wrapped and supported between stiff cardboard formaximum protection via the post – see previous good Feedback from earlierbuyers of my vintage postcards and photographs.
