Please study the photos and note brown stains on each corner of each ticket (top face only) – these are residue marks left by long ago dried out and vanished Sellotape as they were once stuck in a scrapbook.

Here we have seven Ryde St Johns Road (Isle of Wight) station Platform Tickets.

They were issued to either my late father or myself during 1965, the final full year of trains to Cowes and Ventnor. St Johns was our nearest station and we spent many happy hours watching the trains that year, especially the amazing Summer Saturday service (when a train passed through the station every 6 mins!), although we would usually go off riding both lines on those peak never to be repeated days.

In all cases these are buff British Railways Board (S) tickets priced at 3d and all are date stamped on the rears.

THEY ARE:

0070 issued 30 MY 65

0071 issued 30 MY 65

0164 issued 06 AU 65

0308 issued 11 SE 65

0361 issued 22 SE 65

0413 issued 03 OC 65**

0434 issued 10 OC 65

** 3rd October 1965 was originally the day announced for the Cowes/Ventnor closures (it was postponed at the last minute until early 1966). The LCGB had planned a farewell railtour for this day, which still ran despite the postponement. This ticket was used to watch and photograph W24 come charging through St Johns on the special on a fast run to Cowes & back (we later headed for Apse Bank to see the special – then double headed with W14 added – on its way to Ventnor).

Postage is 99p
