This is a lovely black antique carriage lantern / oil lamp. I bought it from an antique shop which had lots of old railway items in Stratford in Avon about 30 years ago. I used to have a few of these old lamps, but I dont remember ever using this one. It is painted on the outside with a black matt paint. On the inside it looks like it has been painted with a whitish grey paint, mostly at the back but a bit on the sides, which I am not sure is original. There are a few small areas of rust visible in places , the worst is inside the chamber above where the flame would be which I have tried to show in my photograph ( number 11 ), but generally it seems to be in good condition. There is a small amount of wick. The wick holder/ winder is stiff but works and is in nice condition. The oil chamber is in good condition and doesnt leak. There is some solder visible around the edges, especially around the top of it. The lantern has red glass which has some very light scratch marks visible but is otherwise in good condition.
The lamp is 16.5cm tall ( 21cm if the handle is up), 9.5cm wide ( 11cm including the handle ) and just over 7cm deep ( but almost 9 cm if you include the 2 black bars which stick out to protect the glass ).
