Volume 1 reprints UP’s 1897 Diagram Book (Steam), the 1938 Diagram Book (Steam, Electric), and the 1959 Diagram Book (Diesel, Turbine). Volume II, Part 1 covers the Oregon, Washington, Railroad and Navigation Co., the Oregon Short Line, the Union Pacific, the Los Angeles and Salt Lake, and the St. Joseph and Grand Island-Laramie, North Park and Western, and others. Vol. II, Part II discusses boosters, stacks and exhaust systems, compounds, superheaters, fireboxes, backshop scenes (including classified repairs), frames and rebuilding, running gears and valve gears. Both volumes are illustrated throughout with black and white photos.
