Rare antique c1880 Map of the “St. Helen’s & Wigan Junction Railway” Railwayana.Click images to enlargeDescriptionThank you for looking at this listing. This was a very interesting find which came to us in a box of mixed ephemera – an antique map of the St. Helen’s and Wigan Junction Railway and its Connections.
It has proved to be hard to find much information about the railway itself, to date the map. I now believe that this was because the name was, in effect, a working name for the railway during its development, but had changed to the Liverpool, St Helen’s & South Lancashire Railway by 1885 and wasn’t completed until around 1900. This would probably date this map somewhere between 1875 and 1885, born out by the line itself being shown dotted, so presumably still in the planning stage. I’m sure that railway historians may be able to confirm or correct this assumption.
Absolutely know idea what this would be worth to collectors so offering for auction initially. If it is not sold, then it will be opened later for best offers.
The map measures 50cm x 35 cm. It has remained in surprisingly good condition for its age, though obviously with a degree of light damage, wear and tear as shown. I have tried to highlight the condition in the photographs. It should be possible to restore this quite well if looking to display it.
