This cast iron railway wagon plate was attached to the frame of a steel bodied wagon, this example was for a 21 ton hopper wagon and was built by Charles Roberts of Sheffield.Charles Roberts & Company’s wagon works was located at Horbury Junction southeast of Horbury, West Yorkshire. In the late 1950’s and early 1960’s BR were replacing the wooden wagons built by the pre-nationalised railway companies and private owners. They were built both by BR and private wagon manufacturers. Little did BR know that the collapse of the coal industry and railway freight traffic in general in the 1960’s that soon these wagons, made in huge numbers, would be obsolete and would be scrapped.
The plate has been carefully restored to display condition. It was probably purchased from BR’s Collectors Corner at Euston many years ago. Please bid only if you intend to complete the purchase. UK based bidders only please unless you contact me in advance. This item is heavy, the price for delivery is as quoted by UPS 2 day delivery plus paypal charge. You are recommended to collect it if possible from St. Albans or make your own courier arrangements. Payment is accepted by PayPal, cleared cheque or cash on collection. The items will only be released on receipt of full payment.
