Founded in 1959 to preserve a just-retired Type 5 streetcar, No. 5706, the Boston Street Railway Association has evolved and grown from 10 founding members to a membership of nearly 900 worldwide! In 2009, we celebrated our 50th anniversary of incorporation, and held a series of events and produced several materials that commemorated the historic milestone.
As one of the largest organizations of its kind, the Boston Street Railway Association has provided its memberswho amount to nearly 900 persons in 2009with quality publications, top-notch entertainment programs, and fascinating fan trips, and has done so for fifty years. The Association wasn’t always a multi-faceted operation, however. In its earliest days, a group of ten young transit enthusiasts in the Boston area formed the BSRA with a relatively simple goal of preserving a streetcarand saved it from the scrap heap.
