Circa 19153″ x 4″Magic Lantern Slide / Glass NegativeofFDNY / New York CityFiremen, Firefighters Fighting Fire fromElevated Railroad or Subway Tracks

~ Provenance ~
Item(s) in this listing originated from the estate of Kenneth & Bette Mayer in Dittmer, Missouri. Kenneth Mayer was a dedicated Fire Fighter for 30 years. The 1912-1915 collection was discovered in a dry cellar as the next of kin were prepping contents of the home for sale. Most of the slides / negatives depict St. Louis and New York City firemen, firefighters, firehouses, fires, hook and ladder trucks, pumpers, firefighting equipment, police, horses, parades, events, funerals / services, rescues / recoveries, fire origination inspections, destruction ruins. Some images are of civilian children / people in 1904 World’s Fairgrounds and romantic settings. Several include advertising. Since many of the images are from behind the scenes of the fireman’s quarters, department firehouses, and daily routines, the collection may have been assembled by a station fire chief or investigator.
Watermarks:Some of the images in this collection have “EBAY – GOODCHOICE” watermarks added to the digital photos shown in the listing for the sole purpose of protecting the unique use and reproduction interests of the buyer. Watermarks do not appear on the actual glass slides.
Reminders:Look at the pictures for condition. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask before bidding.
All items “as is”. 100+ year old glass slides & negatives are fragile and in some cases are cracked or split. Most have two panes of glass, one with the photographic image and a second to reinforce the first. More often the reinforcement plate has taken the brunt of the wear and has broken or is no longer partnered with the photographic image. It is because these are so fragile, that we’ve taken the following steps to minimize the chance of damage in shipment.
Shipment Packaging:Each individual glass negative / slide has been inserted into a glassine envelope which is taped to a 5×4 inch card of chipboard. Another equally sized chipboard card is sandwiched on top of the first and both are inserted into a durable plastic DVD Jewel box. The Jewel box is then inserted into a 5×8 bubble envelope. It (along with others if a multiple order) is placed into an 8x6x4 box filled with bubble or foam peanuts for shipping. We shipped several test slides in boxes to examine their outcome thru shipment and no damage was detected. However, due to the fragility of these 100+ year old slides, additional cracking or damage may occur, despite our preventative efforts.
