This is the British Railways rule book issued to me when I worked as a trackman on one of the five Newton Abbot based permanent way gangs back in 1972. Red plastic covers in good condition, no significant marks. Very comprehensive contents covering Employment and discipline, General, Fixed signals, Handsignals, Signals, track circuits and other signalling equipment, Detonators, Level crossings, Working of trains, Shunting, Detention of trains on running lines, Signallng during fog or falling snow, Trains stopped by accident, failure, obstruction or other exceptional cause, Working traffic of a double line over a single line …, General duties of staff of Engineering Department, Safety of men working on or about the line – appointment of Lookoutmen, Protection of engineers’ trains working on a running line not in absolute possession of the Engineer, Loading or unloading of Engineer’s to and from rail vehicles which may be moved, Protection of hand trolleys on a running line not in the absolute possession of the Engineer, Engineering work – obstruction of the line and temporary speed restrictions. In other words, pretty well everything that an employee of the Engineering Department needed to know. Sparsely illustrated.
