Attention to detail is the mark of a good model engineer. The material featured in this programme was filmed by model engineers and provides a unique record of the British Steam Locomotive – together with its surroundings – from as far back as 1929. At Barton – on the Southport to Hillhouse Jcn line, one of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway’s Railmotors performs the ideal filming operation – “running round”. LMS days at Leamington Spa Avenue see a Webb 2-4-2T bound for Coventry preceding the arrival of an elegant George the Fifth 4-4-0. Early 1930’s scenes of ECML motive power in the yard adjoining Kings Cross:- N2s, Ivatt Atlantics, and a K3 simmer as an A1 moves through the yard. 6000 King George V awaits us at Reading General, but our main GWR visit is to Exeter St. Davids where sister Kings together with Castles provide a galaxy of arrivals and departures. Just before we
take our leave a quite immaculate Southern Railway T9 4-4-0 rolls elegantly in from Barnstaple. LYNTON & BARNSTAPLE RAILWAY (B&W 8 mins. approx.) Barnstaple Junction sees the departure of an N Class 2-6-0 and arrival of an M7 0-4-4T – both on goods workings. The narrow gauge trains departed from Barnstaple Town Station and 759 Yeo is followed via Woody Bay to Lynton’s top-of-the-hill terminus. Later in the day – and scenes of the train heading back to Barnstaple at Woody Bay and Blackmoor spell out in clear detail what a major tourist attraction the
Lynton and Barnstaple could have been … if only! It was not to be as historic sequences show the then last remaining L&B engine 188 Lew being loaded on to a low wagon,
bound for workshop repair and subsequent service in BrazilLONDON TERMINII, CIRCA.1929 (B&W9mins. approx.) At Euston we watch traffic outside the station, and some superb angles of 6111 Royal Fusilier prior to and at
departure. Scenes of the train out in the country at speed precede our move across the road to St. Pancras to
witness a departure by Compound 1092 on the Thames-Clyde Express. A1 2546 Donovan greets us at Kings Cross where we view the unique booster-fitted C1 Atlantic 4419 departing on a vintage set of heavyweight Pullman coaches followed by 4475 Flying Fox setting off with the 10.00 a.m. Flying Scotsman. A move west to Paddington – 6004 King George 111 heads the Cornish Riveria Express, followed by a rare sequence of the short- lived Torbay Pullman with a Castle in charge. The Southern Railway were a full decade away from Bullied’s Pacifies – with Lord Nelson and King Arthur 4-6-0s their mainstay. At Victoria 859 Lord Hood is in command of the Golden Arrow, while 796 Sir Dodinas Le Savage tackles the Southern Belle. Waterloo – and the huge ‘A’ signal box is still in situ as we watch 860 Lord Hawke and 791 Sir Uwaine head for the West Country. Our pre-war
section concludes with a unique view of the last run of an LBSCR Baltic Tank – 2331 on the 5.05 p.m. from London Bridge to Eastbourne. IN THE REIGN OF STEAM (Colour 20 mins. approx.) Gilbert Kilburn used a movie camera and colour film to good effect in the 1950s. This was the time of change on BR from blood and custard carriages to the all-maroon with straw lining livery … but still a nearly all steam scene.
We travel around Britain and view action on all the Regions. Penzance, North Wales, the WCML, the S&C, the West Highland lines, the ECML and the Southern. Britannias, Duchesses, Black 5s, 4MTs and 2MTs, an unrebuilt Patriot, 4F, K1s and K2s, LMS Compound and LNER D49 4-4-05, an A4 and A3s, 70004 William Shakespeare in full Golden Arrow regalia, Arthurs and Nelsons, plenty of unrebuilt Bulleid pacifies including a Merchant Navy.
