A little info about the Project.
1995 – The MBTA and Amtrak rehabilitated the viaductfor high-speed Acela Express train service. The main objectives of this $10 Million dollar projectwere to widen (13′ track centers), strengthen and lengthenthe viaduct with anew cantilevered, precast, prestressed concrete deck, replace the concrete deckarchesand institute electrification via catenary lines.Voltage for the 25 kV AC lines is provided by the electricalsubstation at thesouth end of the viaduct. The original iron fence was also removed, refurbishedand attached to the new deck. The new deck was 8′ wider, with 4′ walkways oneach side that eliminated the needfor the jump-out platforms. The concreteroadway portal was refinished andthe USCGS benchmark was replaced. The Canton Viaduct, also known as”The Great Wall of Canton,”was built by the Boston andProvidence Railroad, between 1834 and 1835. At its time of completion, thestructure was the longest and tallest railroad viaductin existence, spanning615 feet, andstanding at 70 feet tall.Today, it is the last surviving viaductof its kind, and is quite a sight to behold. For 179 years of continuousservice, she ain’t lookin’ too bad!
