A Tale Of Many Gauges Volume 3

from the archive collection of James Boyd

VHS Video by Railfilms. Released in 1999.

Running time approximately 66 minutes.

“This, the final volume from the collection of noted railway historian James Boyd, brings to the screen more unique archive footage of railways throughout these islands, while also telling us something of the man himself.

James Boyd opens the programme at the Downs School in Worcestershire, where as a pupil in the 1930’s he encountered two very different life-shaping influences: a miniature railway in the school grounds, operated by the boys themselves; and a rather unorthodox English master by the name of W. H. Auden.

The main part of the programme is a fascinating ‘tale of many gauges’, with James Boyd’s priceless cine collection leading us from the 15″ Fairbourne Railway, newly emerging from dereliction in 1948, to the 5′ 3″ of Ulster in the last days of steam.

On the way we encounter many remarkable scenes, such as the ex-Welsh Highland tank ‘Russell’ at work on Fayle’s Tramway in Dorset; the de-elecrified Holcombe Brook branch in Lancashire, just before complete closure; and the very last Hughes Lancashire & Yorkshire 4-6-0 on a special run in 1951 – as well as many historic scenes at a host of other locations.

We conclude back at the Downs School, where, despite recent health problems, James Boyd continues to keep a fatherly eye on the minature railway and its youthful operators. This programme is a tribute to one whose research and writing is a seminal part of our narrow-gauge railway history; and whose guidance has helped many in their formative years.”

This video has been tested and is in very good condition. The case and sleeve are also in good condition overall, except for a slight tear of the clear plastic outer sleeve on the top front edge, and a small crack in the side of the case.
