This is the first volume of a series of DVDs recreating the heady days of the train spotter. With a mix of colour archive, video and digital footage, it will bring back memories of those days spent on stations, at the line side and travelling on steam hauled trains. It starts with ‘on train’ footage of TUDOR MINSTREL slogging up the WAVERLEY ROUTE, then CLAN MACKINTOSH tackling BEATTOCK in 1965. Steam scenes at EDINBURGH ST. MARGARETS SHED follows before a visit to
EDINBURGH WAVERLEY with Black 5s and a Bl, then video footage of an ‘Edinburgh Suburban’ rail tour in December 1989. Back to 1965 and 44903 departs HAYMARKET before moving on to THORNTON JUNCTION showing a variety of locomotives including B Is, a 136 and 137s. Travelling north, ABERDEEN FERRYHILL DEPOT is visited with A4s, Black 5s, Bls and a WD. Diesel haulage takes us on to FRASERBURGH, CAIRNIE JUNCTION, and the CRAIGELLACHIE-
AVIEMORE LINE, all in 1965. DUNDEE TAY BRIDGE DEPOT next features before travelling on to ALLOA depot and station. 42264 departing PORT GLASGOW, two Standard Class 4 2-6-4Ts at GOUROCK, a Standard Class 4 2-6-0 departing CARTSDYKE and a visit to GREENOCK LADYBURN DEPOT with ex LMS Class 4 2-6-4Ts make up the GLASGOW SUBURBAN section of this programme. 60004
KINGFISHER is seen at GLASGOW BUCHANAN STREET before A4 haulage takes us, with views passing ST. ROLLOX DEPOT, on to STIRLING where there is a variety of Stanier Class 5s and A4 arrivals and departures. 73149 then hauls our train to PERTH for a visit to the depot and station. Diesel haulage then ensues, over the route between DUNBLANE and OBAN before a run up the branch to BALLACHULISH. Moving forward to October 2004, a series of special workings on the WEST HIGHLAND line are filmed with 44996, 62012 and 61264 in glorious autumn sunlight. Picking the best of the shots, all the locomotives are seen working hard at classic locations including the climb to COURROR SUMMIT culminating in a double headed run towards COUNTY MARCH SUMMIT with 44996 and 61264. Five scenes of the West Highland are seen with 5305 in not so perfect weather conditions before the closing shots of the depot at STRANRAER and 60009 on a Forth Bridge Special.
