All Aboard!
Here you have a chance for a bouillon or soup cup made by Homer Laughlin China for the National Passenger Rail Corporation, also known as Amtrak. This was part the first pattern used by Amtrak in their early days, when they began to replace the china used by the railroad dining cars that Amtrak received in 1971. It was made by Walker, then Mayer, and from 1975 to about 1982 by Homer Laughlin in this controlled exclusive pattern. In 1982 Amtrak went to paper and plastic, when it returned to real china it used a different pattern (Claytor). So this pattern was used for only about ten years. As it is not marked, it was often overlooked, and trashed (especially by aficionados who missed the fallen flag dining cars like the Pennsylvania, New York Central, Southern and Union Pacifics). Hard to find today! Came from a retired Amtrak porter’s collection.
This 4″ diameter bowl stands about 2 1/4″, was made in 1979 (TD-I) and is cast in white. It has the National pattern decoration of a band of blue edged with a gray thin pinstripe. There never was an Amtrak topmark or backmark (Amtrak was supposed to be a temporary measure, like Conrail was). It has seen light service, it has some light wear but is in awesome condition and would make a fine display item as well. Please look at the pics for the best description.
I also have other Amtrak National items up as well.
