Antique 1890s Union Switch & Signal CO. Cast Iron RailroadTransformer
A Double Collectable Both Railroad And EarlyElectronic Component! There’s a lot of character to thisantique railroad transformer. It is avery rare early model with only a single primary input and a single secondaryoutput. Its frame is cast iron and abrass manufacturer’s nameplate with hand punched specification numbers ismounted to the front. The post terminalsstill have the original brass hardware attached in the way of nuts and washers. The brass plate on the front reads”THE UNION SWITCH CO. SWISSVALE, PA. U.S.A. -TRANSFORMER – 50VA – 60CYCLES – TYPE NL – SPEC 831 – SERIAL No. 27451″. I was told that units with 5 digit serial numbersare very early and date this piece to the 1890s. I tried to confirm this by research onlinebut could not find any other examples this early. It measures 5-7/8 by 3-1/2 X 5-1/2 highwith a hefty weight of nearly 7 lbs. This would make an awesome display piece forether railroad memorabilia or early electronic components making it a doublecollectable. George Westinghouse founded Union Switch &Signal (US&S) in 1881, consolidating the assets of the Union ElectricSignal Company (founded by track circuit inventor, William Robinson) and theInterlocking Switch & Signal Company (which had pioneeredinterlockings). US&S operated as anindependent company until 1917, when it became a subsidiary of the WestinghouseAir Brake Company (WABCO).
