This is one of the earliest items made by Lucas at their Tom Bowling Lamp Works in Birmingham UK. Dates to the 1870s. It is an unusual, quirky Victorian travellers / readers candlestick designed to be fixed to a window with a rubber sucker. It has several interesting design features. It is marked “The New Edinburgh RD56168” “TBLW”. TBLW stands for Tom Bowling Lamp Works. Lucas moved to these works on Little King Street Birmingham in 1875. The initials TBLW were used as a logo on products only until 1878. The candlestick is designed to be used by travellers on trains, in waiting rooms, hotels or possible also in horse-drawn carriage. The candlestick has an articulated arm which can be adjusted to take account of the angle of the window. If the arm is not screwed too tightly into the base then it also is gimbled..The candle which is held in a cylinder which has 2 caps. One is an annular ring which fits on the top and allows the tip of the candle to protrude. The candle has spring under it which pushes it up as it burns. The other cap is a snuffer which can be fitted to the base of the cylinder when not in use.The rubber ring is missing. It was removed by a previous owner when the rubber perished. This is a pity from an originality point of view but it does make it easier to fix the candlestick to a wooden panel or plinth. The base consists of 2 plates. The inner one can be screwed to panel or a small plinth and the whole thing can then be screwed back together flush with the wood. It can then be used as a candle sconce. The body arm and base are nickel plated brass. There is some normal usage wear to the plating with dark patches and areas where the brass is showing through. There is some verdigris inside. The spring has some rust but is still strong and in working order. It has sufficient compression to hold a candle up to about 10cm (4″) long. There is the stub of an old candle in it.Weighs about 155g (5.5ozs). See last photo for dimension. This is a rare, interesting and unusual piece. It is great for collectors or for anyone looking for an unusual wall candle. Thanks for looking. Please check out my other items.
