Here is a 7 1/4 in long piece of mining rail that was found while ditching Railroad Tunnel 41 on Donner Pass. Rails like these were used for carts while excavating the tunnels. This piece is an end piece that is drilled for a joint bar. It has W.V Rail C0 8lb embossed in the web which stands for West Virginia Rail Co. some of the letters are missing due to the joint bar holes. It stands 1.5 inches tall, the rail size is 8lb rail, meaning it weighs 8lbs per 3 ft of track, modern train rail is 136lb or so. It was cleaned up a bit, but the rusty patina was left, it has a clearcoat on it. Check out the pictures.
