Antique N&W RY Railroad Track Cant Level
**The ONLY ONE Anywhere in the WORLD**. There is NOT even one photo of a cant like this on Google. A true Museum piece you can own today.
It is 84 1/2″ x 8 x 1 1/8″ and has normal expected wear. The stepped part is metal and there is a level at the other end of the wood. One side has the original N&W logo and other side has a repainted logo done by the previous owner, as shown.
Since the early beginnings of the railway, the track engineers were aware of the centrifugal forces influence to the train riding when passing through a curved section of track. To compensate this influence, the track was inclined laterally by creating a positive level difference between the outer and inner rails of a curved track. This inclination is called cant or superelevation. Since then, the cant is measured as the level difference between the rail heads. The level difference was reported to a horizontal reference defined by a spirit level. This principle of measurement, refined and modernised, is still in use today in almost all the guided systems of transport.
