Signal Box seen here prior to closure during its late BRoperational BR period. The signal box was built in the lateC19 for Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company by theRailway Signal Company of Fazakerley, Liverpool. It still stands impressively todayapprox. a mile south of the village voted by the BBC as one of the Top 10Listed signal boxes in the UK. It is now listed by English Heritage and was restoredto its former glory in 2004.The station of Appleby was opened bythe Trent, Ancholme and Grimsby Railway on its 14 mile long line fromGunness, on the east bank of the Trent where it made an end-on junction withthe South Yorkshire Railways line from Doncaster, and Wrawby Junction, near Barnetby, where it met the main line of the Manchester, Sheffield andLincolnshire Railway from Retford to Grimsby. The station was staggeredover a level crossing. The line was absorbed by the M. S. & L. R., later the GCR,becoming part of the LNER during the Grouping of 1923. Thestation then passed on to the Eastern Region of BritishRailways on nationalisation in 1948. Though the line from Doncaster to Cleethorpes is still operational, Appleby Station was closed topassengers by the British Railways Board in 1967 as part of the BeechingCuts and the station house demolished.
