ASLE&F Stratford Branch Centenary Badge – With Some History – Lot 171

Belonged to my late Father. 30 years service at Stratford Depot. After leaving the RAF in the early 50’s he joined BR as a fireman then quickly to driver for most of his career.
On 20th November 1984 even though he had been a driver for many years, he was chosen along with one of his colleagues (Tony Gooding) to crew the Flying Scotsman as the “Firemnan” to take the Queen Mother to open the North Woolwich Old Station Museum. My Father (Reginald Roy James Rowe) seen in the picture shaking the Queen Mothers hand and presenting her with a picture is incorrectly identified as the driver by the paper. They changed the presentation over to him because all deemed him far smarter turned out than the actual driver, but failed to change the name when going to print! He was actually the smartest railwayman you would ever meet. Even after 30 years he still wore military toe & heal  capped boots with military mirror shine. He spent years moaning that he didn’t get named properly in the clipping!
Very shortly after joining the railway he was also noted for taking a 25,000 volt electric shock from overhead cables during the period converting from steam to electric. The shock blew every inch of skin off his body. Falling into the coal tender which sealed his body with coal, combined with CPR administered by the driver, he survived. Some 18 months in hospital and staying on the railway, there were still bits of coal in his body as he shook the Queen Mothers hand.
The clipping will be included along with the badge.
