An original LNER series Carriage Print issued in the early 1950s for display in railway carriages. The print survived from the railway stores in the late 1960s and is NOT a reproduction.  The location is Blythburgh, near Halesworth, Suffolk,  Blythburgh may be a small Suffolk village but it is one of the icons of that county, a fact attested by two carriage prints. Blythburgh Holy Trinity Church is “one of the half-dozen grandest Suffolk churches says Pevsner – notably, in this view, for its perpendicular clerestory. Otherwise, Blythburgh is a sweet Suffolk village, once a fully-fledged medieval town. In the railway age it become notable for the slightly eccentric Southwold Railway, near whose trackbed this portrait was made. The Southwold Railway was unique in East Anglia in being on the narrow 3 gauge, and remained independent until closure in 1929. The angle of the church and the position of the river are impossible to achieve this view. What is for sure is that Denham did something wicked with reality to create the composition!. The painting is by the marine artist Henry Denham RBA SGA. These prints are very collectable and are far easier to display than a railway poster (and less expensive, too!). Overall print size 20″ x 10″ (508 x 254mm), Image Size 16″ x 6”. It is in mint, unused condition and I will post, 2nd class delivery in a strong tube. Information on railway carriage prints and compartment illustrations, including full listings, images, history and artists biographies can be obtained in the highly illustrated book Landscapes under the Luggage Rack by Greg Norden. Reproduction original type frames are available on website travellingartgallery.com
