The 1921 Railways Act amalgamating the companies into the Big Four in 1923 continued the progress up to the Summer of 1939. With post-war rapid growth of car ownership and road freight, rationalisation gathered pace. The wholesale line closures of the 1950s-1960s resulted in one-time humble railway tickets becoming lasting iconic mementos of a lost age and lifestyle.

The Coniston railway line ran for 8.5 miles from Coniston to Broughton-in-Furness where it joined the Whitehaven and Furness Junction Railway to Foxfield. British Railways closed the station and the branch to Coniston to passengers from Monday 6th October 1958 and goods from 30th April 1962 Foxfield railway station, on the Cumbrian Coast Line today now serves both the village of Foxfield and the nearby small town of Broughton-in-Furness. It is now reduced to the status of a request stop.
This ticket, issued/dated Saturday 4th October 1958, one of the very last tickets issued from Broughton-in-Furness.
