1920s 40s (?) public address system loudspeakerPossiblyfor industrial, military or railway application. Working!Hereis a great old thing and surely a very rare survivor of its period. Ive noidea what its original application was. Its might have been part of theinternal communication system or in a factory or mill, or maybe from a railwaystation or bus station. Alternatively, as it has been rather crudely painted inkhaki coloured paint, it might have been used in a military installation. Ithink it was probably designed so it could be fitted outdoors as well as indoors.Thespeaker is quite hard to date but looking at other examples online I wouldthink it probably dates to the period between the two world wars. There is nomanufacturers name visible although one possibility is of course, Tannoy. Idid try taking the back-plate off to see whether there was any information onthe other side of it. The screws came out easily but I couldnt easily remove theplate because it is stuck down with paint. It only need a few sharp taps to getit off though.Thespeaker works perfectly. I tested it by plugging it into my hi-fi. At somepoint it has been fitted with a socket for a 2-pin DIN plug, of a kind that waswidely used in the 1960s and 70s. This socket can easily be removed ifpreferred and the speaker cable could simply be attached with a connectingblock.Asyou can see from the photos, the speaker can be screwed flat to a wall via thethree lugs on the back-plate. Alternatively it can be bolted to a bracket bythe bolts on the side so that the angle can be adjusted. A suitable bracketcomes with it (see final image above). The bracket does not look like it is theone that came with the speaker originally but it looks to have beenpurpose-made and it fits perfectly. Thespeaker is made from aluminium and is 5 inches deep by 6 inches in diameter atthe front (13 x 17 cms approx). Obviously it could be repainted if you dontlike the rough but authentic paint job it currently has!Thespeaker would obviously suit a heritage railway or of course, lots of otherrestored 20th century historic sites. Equally, it is a fantastic piece of industrialchic and would look the bees knees in any kind of industrial-themed interiorfrom a bar or restaurant to a contemporary flat in a converted industrialbuilding.
