Nine images of this book are shown below. It is: A Parody on Patience, Respectfully Dedicated to The Chicago & Alton R. R., by D. Dalziel, Drawn and Printed in Colors by Wemple & Co. Lithographers, no date, circa 1885. This hardcover book measures 9 3/4″ x 7 1/4″ and is unpaginated, approximately sixty pages followed by approximately fifty pages of advertisements, most of which are related to railroads and/or Chicago (e.g., please see the last three images below). The book is in Very Good condition with some soiling and edgewear to the binding, with rounding to the board corners (i.e., please see images #2 and #3 below) and with the spine paper lacking along the exterior hinges. There is some penciling to a few pages in the advertising section (e.g., image #9 below); there is some intermittent light foxing. There is a partially-removed label on the front free endpaper, and there is a 3″ x 3/4″ chip at the fore-edge border of a preliminary page. The text is a parody of the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, “Patience”, which was popular in the early 1880’s. There are thirty, full-page, color lithographs by H. W. McVickar; most of the illustrations include railroad employees as cast members in the humorous satire of the play. In short, this is a very-imaginative, approximately 130-year-old book that is very “solid”, and that does show various signs of wear.
