An original British Rail London Midland Region Series D Carriage Print issued in 1957 for display in railway carriages. The print survived from the railway stores in the late 1960s and is NOT a reproduction.

The Conway River & Conway Castle, North Wales by Reg Lander.

This scene is largely still there and remains one of the most entrancing views in Britain.  The combination of a castle so laden with history, an attractive town (with Britains smallest house), messing about in boats, the hills flanking the valley upstream, and the three bridges is absolutely captivating. Todays road traffic is much reduced through the use of an immersed tube tunnel. This leaves the three bridges to be enjoyed. The railway bridge is largely hidden in this view (furthest away) but it is remains a Stephenson tubular bridge. The suspension bridge is pure Telford from 1826 and when the artist was at work in 1957 the newest bridge was freshly made. Some controversy soon followed as the plan was to remove Telfords bridge. The resultant outcry saw the National Trust step in and save it in 1958. By contrast, Buckles 1952 carriage print looked at the view from upstream of the bridges. Since 1986 Conwy has been a World Heritage Site.

These prints are very collectable and are far easier to display than a railway poster (and less expensive, too!).

Print size 20 x 10 inches (508 x 254mm), Image Size 16″ x 6″.  It is in very good, unused condition.

I will post, in a strong tube via royal mail. Original style reproduction frames and prints can also be purchased from travellingartgallery.com

Information on railway carriage prints, posters and compartment illustrations, including full listings, images, history and artists biographies can be obtained in the highly illustrated book Landscapes under the Luggage Rack by Greg Norden
