INTRODUCTIONPreparing a second volume of a Past & Present book is both easier and harder than the first outing – easier in so far as much of the initial research has been done and there are often illustrations left over from the earlier volume that now come in handy, and harder when constantly trying to discover previously unpublished photographs and/or photographers. This latest book is again a mixture of both, but the common theme is the enjoyment I have gained from its preparation. As those who know me will be aware, I do not like re-using images previously included in any of my productions (or, indeed, widely available elsewhere), but in this collection I make no excuses for revisiting a shot of one of the later freights to leave Parkend. The reason why is explained in the relevant caption and I hope readers will understand and forgive me!Much has happened over the years since I worked on Volume 1, and the progress made by the railway over the intervening period is covered within these pages. The most important and momentous occasions were the re-opening to Parkend – for the first timetabled passengers services since 1929! – and the visit of HRH Princess Anne to formally recognise this fact. I was privileged to be present at both events and I would like to congratulate the railway on these achievements and for their courtesy in inviting me to travel to the Forest to enjoy the two days. The railway has achieved much in the last few years and, while there will now most likely be a period of consolidation and reflection, I am aware that the Directors, members and volunteers are already thinking about the next step. Coleford Junction (in the shorter term) and Speech House Road are already in their sights, and it is to be hoped that progress will not be tortuous! Much of the speed of this progress will be governed by the practical support whether financial or physical – of those keen to see the extensions, and one can pray that new, young volunteers will continue to join the railway and add their own brand of support. But all can do much by advertising the railway and its achievements, even if they are `armchair’ supporters. The Forest of Dean is a special place and it would be wonderful to see the railway bringing people into the area to enjoy its unique nature, without destroying that uniqueness through the influx of the motorcar!I have thoroughly enjoyed ‘going back in time’ – which is so easy to do in the Forest – and wallowing in nostalgia, and I hope that you, dear reader, will equally enjoy this journey. The images have been carefully chosen and I hope you will excuse the occasional diversion from a strict ‘past and present’ comparison. As with my other books, if anyone finds errors, or would like to add to the well of knowledge plumbed for the book – or, indeed, would like to pass on any messages and/or comments about the collection – I would be pleased to hear from them via the publisher. Any errors are mine alone and I would like any to be corrected in time for any possible future reprint. We are fortunate that there were – and still are – skilful, dedicated and energetic photographers who thought nothing of travelling the length and breadth of the UK to capture images on film. There are undoubtedly more views of the railways of the Forest ‘out there’. Again, I would be delighted to hear of any, especially from those who have not had their work previously published. Finally, by all means use this book as a sort of travel guide, and go out and enjoy yourselves!
