An unissued example of a Dinorwic Quarry Railway workman’s travel check. Approx. 42mm in diameter, non ferrous metal.
The Dinorwic Quarry Railway, also called the Padarn Railway, was built in 1843 to four feet gauge to connect the quarries in Llanberis, North Wales, with Port Dinorwic on the Menai Strait. Slate was carried in 1′ 10-3/4” gauge wagons on top of four foot gauge transporter wagons to Penscoins, and the small wagons let down an incline to the Port.
Carriages were built for the wider gauge railway in order to carry quarry workmen from their outlying villages to the quarry in the mornings, and home again at night.
Travel Checks were issued to each workman who wished to travel by this train, and the example here was for travel from the quarry workshops in the Gifach Ddu area to the village of Bethel, about 5 miles away.
The Railway closed in 1961
The example is an unissued check, as the check number, carriage number and seat number have not been stamped on it. I have listed it as used, as there is slight staining on one face, but it was never issued to a quarryman.
A rare opportunity to obtain an unusual item of North Wales Slate Quarrying interest.
