THIS IS THE FLAG AND DIAMONDS VOL 7 , NO 3 , ISSUE 27 1987.  PRODUCED BY THE ANTHRACITE RAILROADS HISTORICAL SOCIETY. THIS  ITEM WOULD BE A GREAT REFERENCE OF THE HISTORY OF ANTHRACITE RAILROADS.      FRONT COVER:  THE CRUSADER AND THE TRAINMAN”  THE STAINLESS STEEL TRAIN THAT THE READING PUT IN SERVICE BETWEEN PHILADELPHIA AND JERSY CITY JUST 81 YEARS AGO IS SHOWN RRIVING AT READING TERMINAL IN PHILADELPHIA .  THERE WERE TWO STREAMLINES ENGINES AND THEY WERE SCRAPPED IN THE 1950’s.             WELCOME ABOARD,  PIGGYBACK SERVICE ON PHOEBE SNOW ON THE LACKAWANNA RAILROAD.   MOST OF US ARE WELL AWARE OF RAILROAD’S RECENT AND MODERN EVOLUTION OF FREIGHT MOVEMENT.  SPECIFICALLY, I AM REFERRING TO THE DOUBLE-STACK CONTAINER TRAIN, SEVERAL OF WHICH CRISS-CROSS THIS COUNTRY EVERY DAY.  THE DELAWARE, LACKAWANNA & WESTERN TRAIN NO. 51 FROM SECAUCUS USUALLY LEFT WITH 70 CARS OF L.C.L. FREIGHT.  THAT’S LESS THAN CARLOAD FREIGHT.  15 PHOTOS, A ADVERTISEMENT, A ROSTER OF FLATCARS BUILT 1950-1959A SCHETCH OF A TRAILER.50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE CRUSADER.   FEBRUARY, 1988 MARKER THE 50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE READING’S ONLY STREAMLINED PASSENGER TRAIN, THE CRUSADER.  TO BE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT, THE TRAIN HAD ENTERED SERVICE WITH NO NAME IN DECEBER 1937.  TO COME UP WITH A NAME THE READING COMPANY SPONSORED A PUBLIC CONTEST.  A $250.00N CHECK WAS PRESENTED TO THE WINNER OF THE CONTEST TO NAME THE FIRST STEAMLINED TRAIN IN THE EAST.  MR. SILZER’S ENTRY WAS AMONG SOME 6,086 SUBMITTED FROM DECEMBER 13, 1937 TO JANUARY 15, 1938.  IT WAS ANNOUNCED THE READING COMPANY OFFERS IN ITS STREMLINED TRAIN A REAL “CRUSADER” IN COMFORT-SPEED-SAFETY-LUZURY, AT NO EXTRA COST, ONE ENJOYS HIS OWN ARNCHAIR SEAT, PORTER SERVICE, WIDE VISION WINDOWS, AIR CONDIRIONING, OBSERVATION CUB CAR, LUXURY DINER, SCIENTIFIC LIGHTING ALL FITTINGLY ENCLOSED IN THE STAINLESS ARMOUR OF THE CRUSADER.
