It was founded in 1876 byFred Harvey to cater to the growing number of train passengers. When Harveydied in 1901, his family inherited 45 restaurants and 20 dining cars in 12states. Fred Harvey is credited with creating the first restaurant chain in theU.S. Harvey and his company also became leaders in promoting tourism in theAmerican Southwest in the late 19th century. The company and its employees, including the famous waitresses who came to be known as Harvey Girls, successfully brought new higher standards of both civility and dining to aregion widely regarded in the era as “the Wild West”. The popularityof the Harvey Girls grew even stronger in 1946 when Judy Garland starred in thefilm version of Samuel Hopkins Adamss novel The Harvey Girls.Moreon skylines: What is a skyline?  The first skyline spoon design, on the tagend of the Art Nouveau era, was patented in 1901 and by 1913 designs werebeginning to change under the influence of Art Deco and no more new trueskylines were introduced. A true skyline should be viewed horizontally (theexception being the three stacked skylines of Chicago, New York and Boston)which eliminates monuments such as the Statue of Liberty and the WashingtonMonument. There are city skylines, building skylines, riverscape skylines, bridge skylines and natural skylines (mountains and such). Partial skylines arewhen less than half the handle shows a skyline. I only know of only oneenclosed skyline that Ouida Verizzo, author of American Skyline SouvenirSpoons, considers a true and that’s an Atlantic City spoon. The other pointedhandled spoons with a band of silver enclosing the cutouts around a few buildings,a mountain or a scene near the tip of the handle are not true skylines.Samuylow, Henrieta Jacobson, and Yetta Zwerling.
