LETTERPRESS PRINTER’S BLOCK.
Wooden &Lead-Based Letterpress Printing Block
NOTE: Ifyou want to purchase a piece of American railroad history, don’t buyan image ripped out of some magazine or newspaper. Instead, buy theprinting block that printed the actual image!Priorto the digital age, books, posters, tickets, forms, newspapers, andother types of printed paper wereproduced on a printing press. Movable type and wooden/ metal printing blocks (alsoknown as a letterpresscut orprintingdies)were set in a frame (known as achase)and ink was rolled over the surface of the metal image with a roller(also known as abrayer)before the paper was pressed into the inked surface. This processwas known as reliefprinting whichincluded woodcut, relief etching, linocut, linotype, andmetalcut. You arepurchasing a rare, image copyrighted, railroad related printing blockbelieved to have been used in private print shop to print the Chicago& Northwestern’s tickets, stationary, business cards or similaritems.Thisletterpress metal and wood printing block measures 0.915″ deepby 0.505″ high by 0.842″ wide and weighs approximately 0.5ounces (15 grams). This stamp is a professionally made, letterpressblock used for printing. It shows some surface wear from being inthe press. Based upon the other blocks within the group, this blockis believed to have been produced and used during the 1960s and/or1970’s. Although you will be receiving the entire wood and metalprinting block, the image you are looking at is a high-resolutionimage of just the block’s metal printing surface (so that you can seethe considerable detail).ABOUTTHE IMAGE: The St. Louis San Francisco Railway was incorporated in Missourion September 7, 1876. It was formed from the Missouri Division andCentral Division of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. Afterbankruptcy, the Frisco emerged as the St. Louis and San FranciscoRailroad, which was incorporated on June 29, 1896. This company alsowent bankrupt. On August 24, 1916, the company was reorganized as theSt. Louis San Francisco Railway, although the line never wentwest of Texas. The Friscomerged into the Burlington Northern Railroad on November 21, 1980.The city ofFrisco, Texas was named after the railroad and currently uses theformer railroad’s logo as its own logo – it is boldly displayed onthe city’s water tower. The logo is modeled after a stretched-outraccoon skin. (Credit to all of the folks that make Wikipedia.com areality). Thisrare railroad-related printing block makesa perfect gift for yourself, your coffee or end table, on your deskat work, on a shelf, or in your collection. It also makes afantastic gift (no one else is going to give this as a gift!). There is littledoubt that friends who see it will pick it up and ask “Where didyou ever find this unusual item?” NOTESABOUT THE IMAGE SURFACE: Everytime a die passes through the printing press, the pressure of thedie’s impression on the paper subtly degrades the surface of theplate/die/block.
