Great Eastern Signalling Set A 11 6×4 COLOUR Prints The Great Eastern Railway isone of the more neglected of the major pre-group companies, which is a pity, asit was a distinctive and interesting company. This set of eleven 6×4 ins colourprints on GER signalling opens with a view of Snettisham signal box on the longabandoned Hunstanton branch. It is a GE Type 2 box, a design current from c1876to 1882, and is seen in ER weathered blue-green and cream in April 1971.Whittlesea, which dates from 1887, is a GE type 7 box. It is seen in April 1971in all over medium grey with white window frames and bargeboards and blackdoors. As well as an exterior, we see the original 1887 Saxby & Farmer 5rocker frame, most of which was still in use at the start of the 1970s. Aportrait of the signal box diagram recalls the nest of sidings that existed onthe down side, plus two separate connections on the up side. North Wootton, onthe Hunstanton line is a classic all wood type 7 GER box, but has an extendedplatform and a toilet added to the rear wall. The box is seen after closure, but records the bleached blue-green and cream Eastern Region colours well. EastDereham North signal box was one of several boxes at this triangular junctionthat has long since been closed. It is an all timber type 2 box, but hasreceived brick foundations at some time. It is seen on 12 July 1971. St IvesJunction box was located in the V of the junction, with the joint GN & GEHuntingdon line to the left in this view which dates from October 1970. It is aGE/Saxby brick and timber type 5 box with the characteristic small upper windowpanes, rusticated boarding above the windows, and ornate bargeboards.Dullingham is a brick and timber GE/Stevens type 4 box of 1883, with rusticatedboarding above the windows but to a different style to St Ives. The lever framewas replaced by an Individual function switch panel in 1978, which is depictedin May 1991. Tokenless Block was developed on BR in the 1960s, Dullingham beingone of a limited number of places to be so equipped. The instrument, with abarrier control box sitting above it, is illustrated. The final bonus view inthis selection is of the wooden level crossing gates at Dullingham with theusual tall GE gate post with diagonal tie rod sloping down to the gate.
