…The years following the end of the Great War 1914-1918 were ‘high summer’ for many railways. The 1921 Railways Act amalgamating the companies into the Big Four in 1923 continued the progress up to the Summer of 1939. With post-war rapid growth of car ownership and road freight, rationalisation gathered pace. The wholesale line closures of the 1950s-1960s resulted in one-time humble railway tickets becoming lasting iconic mementos of a lost age and lifestyle.

Edmondson Card ‘Red Blob’ 1d Platform Ticket
Srl.No. 4639 Dated 21 JA 55Hailsham Railway Station was on the ‘Cuckoo Line’ between Polegate and Hellingly. Originally built in 1849 by the London Brighton and South Coast Railway.
On 14 June 1965 the station became a terminus when the line northward closed to passenger traffic. Freight continued northwards as far as Heathfield until 26 April 1968 when a bridge at Horsebridge, north of Hailsham, was damaged beyond economic repair so line was subsequently never reopened to Heathfield. On 8 September 1968, the last passenger train left Hailsham at 10:30pm and the station and line then closed completely.The station site was mostly cleared for a housing estate in the 1980s.
