Canadian National Railways is the largest and one of the oldest of the world’s railway systems. Its whole story is told for the first time in this definitive history: its stormy early years, its growth, paralleling -indeed shaping-the growth of Canada itself, and its status internationally today. It is an epic of the great railroad from the pioneer days in the 1830s, when “the scream of the locomotive whistle in its ponderous flight across the countryside promised an almost psychic release from the bondage of their isolation and loneliness,” to the technologically sophisticated 1970s.The history is full of anecdotes of some of the most colorful men in railway history: Francis Hincks, Joseph Howe, Sandford Fleming, Commodore Vanderbilt, James J. Hill, Donald Mann, William Mackenzie, Sir Henry Thornton and many others. There are also stories of promoters and politicians, geniuses and blunderers; of chicanery and heroism, high- and low-level razzle-dazzle transactions and hocus-pocus.
Every area is covered: the incredibly complex financial affairs, the survival through wars, panics, the Depression, political maneuvering-and the challenge of building a railroad through thousands of miles of one of the most difficult terrains on earth. It is at the same time the social history of a country emerging from frontier days and provincialism to nationhood and world power. Today’s technological revolution and its sweeping effects on railroading-and how the Canadian National Railways met the challenge-are a vital and fascinating part of the book. The scope of the operation is indicated in this speech by the system’s President, Donald Gordon, in 1950: “Daily as I move across the system I find myself astonished at the unfolding scope and magnitude of its operations. I find that I must be in unequal parts a real estate broker, an engineer, an economist, a motion picture producer, an architect, an electrician, a lawyer, a mechanic, a publicist, an aviation specialist, a bridge builder, a medical man, a foreign trade expert, a hotel manager and on occasion a father confessor and a philosopher. 1 never know whether the next piece of paper on my desk may deal with the affairs of immigrants from Copenhagen or with lights for bunkhouses, or the importation of bananas from the West Indies, or of wool from Australia, coal from the United States, or with new lines designed to open up the empty expanses of Canada.”All of these skills to which Gordon alludes are needed, for the Canadian National Railways is involved in-besides railways-hotels, fleets of ships, airplanes, communication, motion pictures, education, community commitments, research and many other operations. It is today the world’s most efficient publicly owned enterprise, with a network through all ten provinces of Canada, the Northwest Territories, and twelve of the United States.
And here is the story of how the Canadian National Railways reached its present eminence-a stirring, deeply researched and brilliantly written history of one of the major industrial phenomenons of modern times. With 82 photographs.
