A run along the Eastern section of the former Newport – Merstone – Sandown line. In the early 1950’s with large scale closures being proposed, it had been suggested that the Newport-Sandown line should be retained, rather than the Newport-Ryde. The reasoning was that the former generated more traffic from Southampton/Cowes to the East coast holiday resorts.
Horringford lost its connection to the seaside in February 1956, and the Newport-Ryde line survived a further ten years.
