Back in 1956, taking your car on holiday to the Isle of Wight was something of a major event, and booking in advance was strongly recommended. Portsmouth – Fishbourne had as few as 4 sailings on Winter weekdays, and only 14 sailings on Summer saturdays, operated by the original Southern Railway ferries Hilsea, Wootton and Fishbourne, each with a capacity of 18 cars. So, 252 cars total Summer saturday service capacity.
Today, Wightlink’s MV Victoria of Wight alone can carry 178 cars and 1208 passengers per trip.
This little brochure therefore provides a fascinating insight into the rather more sedate days of the 1950’s, and includes a selection of entertaining adverts from the period – 12 guineas a week high season at the 3* Shanklin Hotel.
