Isle of Wight Paper 10cm x 22cm unfolds to 40cm x 44cm
With the end of Isle of Wight steam services in December 1966, British Rail introduced ex-London Transport stock, re-painted and ‘re-furbished’ – but still 40 years old – on the truncated Ryde Pier Head – Shanklin line.
This timetable brochure was issued in March 1967 to create the best image possible for the new electric service, including images posed by agency models enjoying their journey, complete with lots of holiday luggage – a particular concern at the time.
The investment in 1967 was around 500m – equivalent to around 9m today , and served to protect the line for a further 50 years until the welcome 2019 announced 25m investment on new stock and infrastructure.
