JAMES L. HOWARD & CO.RAILWAY CAR HARDWAREHARTFORD, CONN.____________________This listing is for a vintage binder from James L. Howard & Co. It measures 9″ by 10.5″. The prior owner used the binder for photos and newspaper articles like a scrapbook which is why you see the shadow and stain outline remains of what was once behind the plastic coverings on the pages. There are 10 clear plastic sheets for putting papers behind in the binder. It is not dated and there is no maker’s mark.James Leland Howard (1818-1906) founded the company. He received an academic education and started working as a clerk in New York City at the age of fifteen. In 1838, he moved to Hartford, Conn. where he started working in the manufacturing business on his own account in 1841, with his partner Hurlburt, he manufacturing carriage and saddle hardware. They soon added the manufacture of furnishings for railway cars. In 1876, Howard bought out his partner and the company was named James L. Howard & Company. He was also president of the Hartford City Gas Light Company, director in the Phoenix National Bank, the Traveler’s Insurance Co., the Hartford County Fire Insurance Company, the Retreat for the Insane, the Farmington River Power Company, and several other manufacturing companies. Additionally, he was on the board of directors of the New York & New England Railroad Co. The James L. Howard & Company still exists under the name of 1846 Condition as shown in the photos is Fair (see guide below) – so please be sure you are ok with all before buying. Buyer will be someone who understands condition and is ok with it for their collection. There are stain marks on the cover, including lower right corner from paper that stuck onto the cover and also upper left corner remains. Soiling, rub and scuff, age and use. Inside there are stain marks and soiling on the pages and plastic, seam separation at spine. Pre-owned being sold “as is” as was found.Item is being sold …. AS IS …. as was found.
