LANCASHIRE AND YORKSHIRE RAILWAY RULES AND REGULATIONS 1stNOVEMBER 1987 REPRINTED WITH REVISIONS 1st SEPTEMBER, 1908 This 1908 Rules and Regulations book for the guidance of Officersand Men in the service of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company is a revised(updated) reprinted edition of the 1897 guide issued to railway employees. This is a substantial set of rules andregulations that the employee was required to carry with him whilst on duty. Fixed into the back of the book are two booklets of Alterations ofand Additions to the Companys Book of Rules and Regulations. The first is dated June 1910, the second June1912. Also at the back of the book, butnot fixed, is a third booklet of Alterations and Additions dated December 1915. On the front blank flyleaf is written, in neat script, in black inka name, town and date (August 1908) which is probably the original owner ofthis rule book (see photograph). Thesame name is written at the top of the first Alterations and Additions booklet. Considering this rules and regulations book was a working documentit is in very good overall condition considering its age. The dark green boards display only lightrubbing to the edges and corners and minimal knocks and bumps. All pages remain securely bound and are freeof tears, creases and significant marks other than a little light age-relateddiscolouration to the page edges. Thebook runs to 328 pages (16cm x 10cm), includes a working index and isillustrated with a few diagrams and drawings throughout the text. Included with this Rules and Regulations book is ephemeraassociated with the book including a photograph who I presume is the owner ofthe book. A letter (folded) from theGeneral Manager of The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway accompanied the introductionof this book in 1908 and highlights the major revisions. Finally, a card from the Lancashire andYorkshire Railway Telegraph Department which explains the code time formessages, allowing messages to be sent in turn; the reverse of the cardindicates the code for each letter.
