This is an extremely rare teens era, very ornate 12 1/4 x 8 1/2 wide by 7 tall 14 inch pattern style hotel food cover hot food dome for the Fred Harvey Station Eating Houses and Fred Harvey Hotels Santa Fe Railroad. This pattern can be seen on page 113 of Mr. Maffetts railroad silver book Silver Banquet II. This dome / cover would have been used in one of the Harvey Houses Railroad eating houses or hotels along the Santa Fe and Frisco Railroads for covering entrees, meats, and other items that were served in the famous and eloquent Fred Harvey style. It would have been used in connection with the Fred Harvey Santa Fe Railroad China and glassware for actual table and counter service. The dome was made by the Gorham Silver Co. and has the catalog number of 03170, is marked 14 in. and would have been used on a 14″ platter. It is silver soldered. It is the heavyweight type Steamship, Lunch Counter, and Hotel silverplate. The dome is clearly marked on the inside is cursive lettering reading Fred Harvey. It has minor silver plate wear to the outside, the usual light usage scratches and nicks along with a few dents. There is some pitting to the top of the handle. This dome saw many years of railroad service, but is actually stunning in its appearance. The bottom rim of the dome also has the floral ornamental boarder.
