…The years following the end of the Great War 1914-1918 were ‘high summer’ for many railways. The 1921 Railways Act amalgamating the companies into the Big Four in 1923 continued the progress up to the Summer of 1939. With post-war rapid growth of car ownership and road freight, rationalisation gathered pace. The wholesale line closures of the 1950s-1960s resulted in one-time humble railway tickets becoming lasting iconic mementos of a lost age and lifestyle.

Liverpool (Central) – Kirkby-in-Ashfield (East)

The original Liverpool (Central) station opened on 2 March 1874, at the end of the Cheshire Lines Committee line to Manchester Central. It was closed in 1966 under the Beeching Axe when most services on the CLC route were diverted to Lime Street . The station was demolished in 1973, having served a short time as a car park.The present day Liverpool Central railway station forms a central hub of the Merseyrail network. The station is located underground on two levels, below the site of the former mainline terminusKirkby-in-Ashfield was served by three railway stations – Kirkby-in-Ashfield Central station (closed 1962) was located 700m to the west of the present station on the former GCR Mansfield Central branch.
– Kirkby-in-Ashfield East station (closed 1964) was 350m to the east of the present station on the former MR Nottingham to Worksop line.
– Kirkby Bentinck station (closed 1963) was located in Bentinck Town to the south west of Kirkby-in-Ashfield, on the former GCR London – Manchester main line.
The closures of these lines in the 1960’s left the area with no passenger rail services until the reopening of the former Midland Railway route, now known as the ‘Robin Hood Line’, in the 1990s.
