In his new book which Is a review of LNER Standard Gresley carriages – gangwayed and non-gangwayed. It complements but does not duplicate the author’s best-selling LNER Carriages, first published in 1994.LNER Standard Gresley Carriages Is concerned with the Gresley teak-bodled standard designs of coaches and vans Introduced from 1923, and built, In some cases, as late as the early years of World War 2. It also Includes some other types, such as the all-steel coaches and vans built In 1927/28, the luxury ‘Super Firsts’, and one or two other vehicles. Apart from coaches built for the LNER, a handful of designs built for the Cheshire Lines Committee to Gresley designs are Included.Effectively, this volume comes to an end In 1931 so far as entirely new designs of coaches and vans are concerned. It does not Include new designs produced after 1931, In particular the stock for the LNER’s high-speed trains, such as the ‘Silver Jubilee and ‘Coronation’, as well as the so-called ‘end-door’ types of gangwayed stock, and steel-panelled coaches for general service. Also omitted Is the noncommon user stock.The book features the printed official diagrams of carriages Issued by the LNER from 1927, which are reproduced primarily as a means of Identifying the myriad of types. The photographs appearing In the book comprise a mixture of official shots, and of vehicles In service in BR days and endeavour to show as much detail as possible.The book Is arranged in order of vehicle types rather than In chronological order, for the reason that It seemed helpful to be able to compare the various designs of, say, gangwayed brake thirds, or articulated coaches.
