RailroadTreasures offers the following item:  Locomotives Between the Wars by Kevin Robertson Dust Jacket 1991 131 Pages  Locomotives Between the Wars by Kevin Robertson Dust Jacket 1991 131 PagesIn an age when computers and other sophisticated technology seem to dominate almost every aspect of our lives, it is difficult to equate with a time within living memory when such accoutrements were not only deemed unnecessary, but largely unheard of as well. It was an era when, on the railways at least, steam was dominant and an almost countless variety of differing engines of varying shapes and sizes could be seen at the head of trains or waiting in yards and sheds many of which have long since vanished from the scene.Fortunately photography was already well established by the 1930s and so scenes of engines and trains are relatively common, although from the researcher’s viewpoint there must always be the nagging question ‘. . . I wonder what was just out of camera to right (or left)?’Previously the railways of this period have invariably been portrayed by photographs of the largest and newest engines, the majesty and performance of a Great Western ‘King’, LMS ‘Duchess’ LNER ‘A4’, or Southern ‘Lord Nelson’ seemingly of greater interest than the more humble types – even if the latter were, in fact, far more numerous. In displaying only a selection of views of large engines, the balance is incorrect, for the express engines and trains represented but a fraction of railway movement. This volume attempts to redress such imbalance. It is an album of smaller, but equally, and some would say, more interesting-locomotive types; of everyday scenes depicting the railways as they actually were and concentrating on the locomotives themselves. After all, surely these machines are the subject of the greatest interest? The photographs reproduced here were all taken by the late Bernard Anwell and basically fall within the parameters outlined above, with the very occasional exception for reasons of historic interest. In his capacity as a mechanical engineer, Bernard Anwell had free access to numerous railway sites nationwide and the results of that access are seen here. Following his death the collection was for some years in the hands of Walter Gilburt, himself a photographer of some note, and it is through the good offices of this individual as well as the Anwell family that this portrait is presented.
