This little book of trains is beautifully illustrated by Peter North, with text by Michael Robertson. It is one of a series of ‘pocket books’ inspired by the 1960s/70s Thames Television childrens series Magpie, a teatime rival to the BBC’s flagship Blue Peter. The hardback book comprises 44 pages and includes some interesting black and white photographs as well as the illustrations of trains. Were you, for instance, the man or woman posing in the first class dining car for a photograph, or the woman staring intently out of the window in a mock-up of the interior of a new High-Density Passenger Coach being developed at the Derby Works? There are illustrations of train interiors and various train models from across the ages and across the globe. Included is a section on how railways began, looking at George Stephenson’s Locomotion and Hedley’s Puffing Billy, among others. Other images depict the 1939 Brighton Belle, everyone’s favourite – The Flying Scotsman, the 1925 Golden Arrow and 1937 Coronation Scott. In the then ‘modern railways’ section there are illustrations of diesel electric models, sections on maintenance, the travelling post office and sleeping cars, trains in Canada, South Africa, France, Russia, the USA, and a German monorail.A lovely little book, great for its simple nostalgia value as well as its train related contents! Published in 1969 and printed in Holland, the book measures approx 6×4 inches.
